Holi Color Barcelona

Last weekend I had the joy to participate in one of the unofficial Holi One Color Festivals here in Barcelona. It was the first time for me and I really didn’t know what to expect. Just saw some pictures and the only thing that I was looking forward to was ending up with my face full of colors. It took place at the Carmel Square (Plaza Carmel), a small space in the north side of Barcelona. The day was sunny and warm to enjoy a sunday of fun. The festival started at 10:00 am, but we arrived around 12:30 m and it was already full. At 13:00pm there was no color bags’ left, people were wondering around to find groups with color powder left. Fortunately for me, my friends brought some colors they had left from a previous festival. One thing to add to the check list of things to bring to the official festival!

After the festival I decided to investigate a little about the main idea of the Holi Color Festival is and its origin. Holi is a spring festival celebrated by Hindus as a festival of colors. It is primarily held at India and Nepal, but you can also find the festival  in Bangladesh and Pakistan. The main purpose of the festival is to celebrate the beginning of a new season, in this case Spring. Hindus believe it is a time of enjoying spring’s abundant colours and saying farewell to winter. For me was a great plan for a different weekend, to be around friends, laugh and end up looking like a rainbow!
